Priebus: Nominee must earn delegate majority
Solomon Yue, an RNC committeeman from OR, wants Republican convention rules changed to make it harder for a “fresh face” to be nominated.

In the Sunshine State and beyond, Priebus has had the unenviable and delicate task of trying to keep his party from further fraying as Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and John Kasich continue to slug it out in a bitter primary slog that continues into June. “So, it’s up to the campaigns to know the rules and compete in each of those states within the rules”, he said Sunday. His opponents blocked one of their own RNC staffers from making a presentation explaining the two sets of parliamentary procedures. The provision, which Trump and Cruz have met, was pushed in 2012 by Romney backers who wanted to block supporters of former Representative Ron Paul of Texas from entering his name into nomination. Any delegate with an objection would then have to be recognized by the presiding officer.
“Is Donald Trump running against the Republican National Committee?”.
“I feel better about all the candidates”, said Feaman, who attended closed door sessions with Cruz, Gov. John Kasich of OH, and the Trump surrogates.
Cruz has excelled at the inside game, picking off delegates who are committed to voting for Trump on the first ballot in Cleveland but will flip to his side on the second vote – positioning himself for a potential convention upset.
“We have got to be transparent”, Scott said.
At a testy meeting on Thursday, several of his peers on the RNC’s Rules Committee countered that to make a transparently self-serving rule change this late in the primary season would be, in the words of Georgia committeeman Randy Evans, “viewed with a very large degree of cynicism”.
The proposed change was tabled via voice vote at the rules committee meeting in Florida this week, despite a half-dozen or so delegates rising in objection. The perception of the RNC would have been bad if there were any changes”, explained Emineth, “I love the rule as a delegate. We aren’t going to hand the nomination to anyone with a plurality, no matter how close they are to 1,237”, he said, calling the threshold “one of the bedrock values of American government.
Trump remains the front-runner in the Republican primary, but his path to winning the 1,237 delegates he needs tow in a majority and secure the nomination outright has narrowed.
Trump’s team also signaled to RNC members that he was willing to dip into his personal fortune to fund his presidential bid, in addition to helping the national committee raise money, a promise that came as Trump prepared to launch his first big television advertising campaign in a month. Trump said Sunday that, gee, he sure hopes there’s no violence in Cleveland if the party establishment tries to take the nomination away from him.

“I think there’s just a lot of questions out there about, ‘How does this thing work?'” Walden said, noting that he has been asked by people from his district about the convention.
