Test confirms fourth Missouri traveler infected with Zika virus

The first case of Zika virus in the state has been detected in March. The type of mosquito that carries the virus is not found in the area, Drummond said. About 20 percent of people infected show no symptoms and are not aware that they are infected.

But more likely than the possibility of mosquitoes bringing Zika to MS, is the possibility of people bringing it to the state, Dobbs said.

During a live interview on MSNBC on Thursday, April 21, Aretha said, “They’re saying flu-like symptoms”.

“That’s why we want to do a lot more testing”, the mayor said.

As mosquito season approaches, there are more questions than answers about the threat of the fast-spreading Zika virus, which has prompted enough public concern to justify a more proactive posture by health authorities.

Zika is a mosquito born disease and according to new studies, can also be transmitted from man to his sex partners. It is the main culprit of the zika epidemic as well as that of other viruses like dengue or chikungunya.

No vaccine exists yet for the virus and medical authorities have advised people to take preventative measures by avoiding areas where mosquitoes breed, as the disease is primarily transmitted through the insects.

“Receiving this designation will improve our responsiveness to Missourians who are in need of answers and the health care providers who are treating them”, said Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Acting Director Peter Lyskowski.

To help minimize the danger, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday advised that businesses implement safeguards for workers. Strong scientific consensus links Zika to neurological disorders including the Guillain-Barre Syndrome and microcephaly. The symptoms of a Zika infection include mild headaches, rashes, fever, malaise, conjunctivitis and joint pains. And the CDC has issued travel notices for countries affected by Zika, advising pregnant women not to visit those areas. She said that the exact risk of brain-related birth defects to the baby of a mother infected with Zika is still unclear, because some Zika-infected women have given birth to apparently healthy babies. “It’s all because of a mosquito bite or some other means of transmission, such as sexual contact, that has been done outside of Florida”.
