Disney dominates the box office with ‘The Jungle Book’ impressive opening

Disney 3D live-action computer animated film “The Jungle Book” made the turnstiles spin in North America’s movie theatres with $103.6 million in debut weekend ticket sales, box office tracker comScore said. With The Boss and Batman struggling last weekend, The Jungle Book had the box office vacuum I’ve spoken about in the past working for it, and benefited from Batman v Superman evacuating the big auditoriums. Beauty and the Beast, which is due to come out on March 17, 2017, and new versions of Peter Pan and Cruella De Ville will follow and are expected to show the same. It’s earned glowing reviews from audiences and critics, including a very impressive 94% Rotten Tomatoes rating.

The live-action/CGI update of the 1967 animated classic accounted for about 49% of all tickets sold in China in the seven days ending Sunday, according to data from film industry consulting firm Artisan Gateway. “He’s been able to do it in a way that really makes them contemporary and, certainly in this case, fully utilizes available technology”.

The Jungle Book was screened in more than 4000 theaters and the crowd just seems to be growing everyday! Joining the team in the latest installment is Common, Nicki Minaj and Regina Hall.Costner plays a Central Intelligence Agency agent whose mind is implanted with the memories of a dead operative.

In fifth place is Disney’s “Zootopia,” which has stayed in the Top 5 films for the seven weeks it’s been in release.

Disney remake scores third biggest debut of 2016 after “Batman v. Superman” and ‘Deadpool’.

The film proved to be unchallenged as fellow new entry “Barbershop: The Next Cut” landed at number 2 with approximately $20.2 million. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
