Today’s rain was a big relief for the men and women fighting the fire and Fuller hopes that it can be wrapped up in the next few days,”The rain has been a lot of help, it’s helped out tremendously”. The public can expect to continue to see smoke in the region through the weekend.

On Thursday, about 65 forestry service personnel were battling the flames, along with local fire crews.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated. Two of the new fires are in Dickenson County, while the other two are in Buchanan County.

To the west, part of US 25-70 near Hot Springs was closed on Tuesday due to a wildfire near the Tennessee-North Carolina border.

Overnight, firefighters worked to construct containment lines and made good progress, Jennings said. Investigators said they are treating several of the fires as arson, and that rewards are being offered.

Officials say a fire in Brunswick County has burned about 1,600 acres.

The fire has crossed both US 264 to the south and Stomper Road to the east and is now burning on both sides of the Long Shoal River. Officials suspect a human started the fire.
