A shooting inside an Arizona Walmart on Saturday left two police officers injured and a male suspect dead, authorities say.

One witness said he heard 10 shots during the exchange. Chandler police Detective Seth Tyler called the shooting an “ambush”.

Oakley had previously been reported for trespassing at the store.

Both officers were transported to the hospital and are said to be in stable condition.

Mitchell Oakley, 24, was killed after opening fire at officers who were responding to a call about a trespasser, Chandler police said.

The second officer, who was in close proximity, was also shot but was able to return fire.

“A seemingly routine call turned into a deadly encounter within a split second”, Duggan said.

Both officers wore a ballistic vest during the incident.

“Now I’m just waiting for my auto”, she said. Their names will not be released until the family is notified. “We know we have a job to do and the most important thing is ensuring those officers are okay”. She said employees then escorted her and other shoppers to the store’s garden center.
