Microsoft releases Windows 10 in 190 countries

Microsoft, which unveiled Windows 10 in September, skipped Windows 9 altogether, to put some distance between the new system and Windows 8, which confused many users by ditching the start button menu and introducing a new layout. Microsoft rolled out the free update across 190 countries today.

Windows 8 was widely unpopular and left customers with a bad view of Microsoft.

Microsoft has indicated that the free upgrade to Windows 10 will not be available for business and educational institutes; these are expected to receive Windows 10 by August 1.

Others will get the software when they buy a new PC. Windows 8 was clearly intended for mobile devices that had touchscreens as the default input method. Simply select “Create installation media for another PC” and choose the edition of Windows 10 that you need and your language.

Calling it “a disaster waiting to happen”, security expert Brian Krebs writes that because the Windows computer system is far more popular than its Phone OS, the new Wi-Fi feature is “a serious concern for much of the planet”.

Windows 10 also includes the Microsoft Edge browser, a substitute for Internet Explorer, which has been designed to help the company regain market share lost to rivals such as Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.

Windows 10 brings Bing to the forefront, steering numerous integrated apps to Microsoft’s search engine.

CEO Satya Nadella says he wants to have 1 billion devices running Windows 10 in three years.

“We believe that the new Windows can truly help our customers be productive in both their digital work and their digital life, and this represents our first step towards a whole new generation of Windows”, Moreno added. Most computers manufactured this decade should be able to handle Windows 10 without problems. However, since Microsoft had killed support for Windows XP, users had to migrate to the next available option, which was Windows 8 at the time. You just need a 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM (or 2GB for 64-bit), and 20GB of free disk space.
