“Yet again, this time inside the aircraft, a man tries to strangulate me”, Kanhaiya Kumar tweeted.
Kumar and his fellow travellers are registering an FIR against the accused, who is now in police custody at Mumbai airport.
Various right wing groups had threatened to not allow Kumar’s speech to take place, with the Veer Sena catapulting to the limelight after its leader Niranjan Pal confused Kumar’s field of study and said, “We know that he (Kanhaiya Kumar) is pursuing his PhD from JNU and he is threatening to break the nation to pieces”. The poster said, “Whosoever shoots JNU Students’ Union president and seditionist Kanhaiya will be rewarded Rs. 11 lakh on the behalf of Purvanchal Sena”. He appeared to also suggest that the one who is attacked will be “deplaned” by the service provider “if he complains about it”. A source said the government’s 226-page complaint says the broadcasts could have provoked communal violence in the capital. “Some guests on board Jet Airways fight 9W 618 from Mumbai to Pune have been off loaded at Mumbai airport in the interest of operational safety”, a spokesman from the airline said in a texted official statement.

Kanhaiya, who was scheduled to arrive at Pune airport at 1030 hrs this morning by a Jet Airways flight from Mumbai, had not landed in Pune by late afternoon, as representatives of Left-dominated students’ organisations waited to receive him. The programme, called the Student-Youth Assembly Against Discrimination, is being organised by a collective of students and youth organisations of the city. Kumar identified the assaulter as Manas Deka, a TCS worker.
