Soul-searching in order for Manitoba NDP after election loss Tuesday

Step forward Dave Chomiak, an NDP candidate ahead of the Manitoba General Election tomorrow (April 19), who has hit out at Conservative leader Brian Pallister over alleged inconsistencies surrounding his assets.
“A lot of the polling out there was pretty conclusive about the fact that the PCs had a significant across all of Manitoba”.
“I think there was a deep-seated hope within the NDP that Manitobans would forgive him for increasing the PST if there was enough buy-in that …”
The NDP has dominated politics in the province since the 1960s but Mr. Selinger struggled during his seven years as premier, facing down a caucus revolt and pushing through an unpopular sales-tax hike. He reduced income taxes and posted a string of balanced budgets – turning in a surplus every year but one.
NDP Leader Greg Selinger said it will be up to voters to judge Pallister’s time away.
The Tory popular vote was more than 50 per cent. It’s the biggest landslide in Manitoba in over a hundred years. Alberta’s Rachel Notley is now Canada’s sole remaining NDP premier.
After 16 years in office, the governing New Democrats face an uphill battle to hold onto power. The B.C. Liberals have been in power since 2001 and were trailing the NDP in the most recent public opinion survey – but that poll was conducted five months ago and Clark has a history of defying the polls.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also issued a statement late Tuesday congratulating Pallister and the PCs on their election win. Some believed Selinger and the NDP were doomed from the moment in 2013 when they raised the provincial sales tax, breaking a promise made in the previous election.
April 5: Pallister bristles at a small business announcement when a reporter asked questions about Tory plans for children in government care. She has not held a seat in the legislature since she was elected leader in 2013.
Manitoba New Democrats (NDP) had been in power since 1999 and a Conservative takeover in the province has not happened in more than a century.

But he said Pallister’s choice to stay in Costa Rica while the people he used to represent as an MP struggled against flooding speaks volumes about his leadership. “They’ve only had four leaders since the 1960s and they’ve all been premier”, he said. Sellinger also sidestepped a requirement that there be a referendum on tax increases.
