NY probing primary election problems

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The state attorney general opened an investigation Wednesday into New York City’s Board of Elections and complaints about Tuesday’s primaries mainly from would-be voters who were turned away. The state attorney general’s office reported a huge spike in voter complaints.

Many New York residents complained that their records were bundled together with information of other voters who shared similar surnames but not the same party affiliation.

Brooklyn-born Bernie Sanders, who lost to Hillary Clinton in the NY primary, has urged officials to explain the discrepancies in the voting polls.

“By most accounts, voters cast their ballots smoothly and successfully”, Schneiderman said.

The New York Daily News is citing multiple unnamed sources reporting that the reason Haslett-Rudiano has been suspended, and will ultimately be fired, is that she botched the maintenance of the voter roll.

In pledging to audit the city’s Board of Elections, the office of New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer issued a strict verdict.

Tuesday’s primaries have raised more questions than answers for Brooklynites.

“With four elections in New York City in 2016 alone, we don’t have a moment to spare”, said Stringer.

Stringer expressed “deep concern over widespread reports of poll site problems and irregularities” in the letter. He got to his polling location this morning and was told his name was not on the voter list. An additional 70,000 were already inactive and, having failed to vote in two successive federal elections or respond to cancel notices, were removed.

Tommy Hartung, of Queens, told CBS2’s Hazel Sanchez the NY primary was the first time he registered to vote after finding a candidate he supported.

New York Republicans and Democrats on April 19 held presidential nominating contests for the November 8 election.

We found out an entire pool of voters is being punished by the board for not participating in several elections in a row. “I am calling on the Board of Elections to reverse that purge and update the lists again using Central, not Brooklyn borough, Board of Elections staff”.

Michael Ryan, the executive director of the organisation promised to cooperate with both inquiries, but maintained that the body had not done anything untoward.
