Nepal has experienced two great earthquakes in the past 180-year period before last year’s temblor which has been dubbed as the “Gorkha quake”. CCTV’s Hou Yun looks at what progress has been made. About 600,000 homes were destroyed.

Nepal was beset by a blockade by India, the Nepalese government could not formulate a national reconstruction committee due to political infighting, and winter went by with millions without a roof over their heads.

On April 25, 2015, a 7.8-magnitude quake ravaged vast areas of Nepal, followed by a large number of aftershocks, the biggest of all, a 7.3-magnitude one that occurred on May 12.

The great quake had damaged many historical sites including Kathmandu Durbarsquare, Patan Durbarsquare, Bhaktapur Durbarsquare, Dharahara tower, Swoyambhu stupa, Bouddhanath stupa, Gorkha Durbar, Bungamati Matshendranath temple etc.

Anantpur is one of the small Buddhist temples, stupas and monasteries surrounding the 5th-century hilltop shrine of Swayambhunath that lies in ruins.

Gopal Khanal, an aide to Prime Minister Oli, said that the government would make arrangements for proper shelter before the start of the annual rainy season in June, but many are sceptical about the state’s ability to deliver.

He also said the construction of private houses has been initiated in 10 districts to mark the anniversary.

Last week the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said approximately 4 million people continue to reside in temporary shelters that the organization called “sub-standard” and a “threat to their health and well-being”. Only 661 families have received the first installment of a 200,000-rupee ($1,868) government grant, getting 50,000 rupees ($467) so far.
