Wambach: I plan to play in Rio Olympics

“I am not going to play this season, that’s accurate”, she said when asked about playing in the NWSL. So my body took some hits, and I’m trying to recover.

Although Wambach is global soccer’s all-time leading scorer with 183 goals, it may be hard for her to make the team in Rio since the Olympic roster size is 18 compared to the 23 player roster for the World Cup. “But the reality is, if I’m asked to play for my country it might be hard to say no. But I haven’t made any definitive decisions yet”.

“I haven’t decided what I’m going to do”, Wambach said, “but I’m planning on playing in Rio next summer”. Seven games is a lot of games and it wasn’t a long period of time we were playing over.

The tweet removed some context, Wambach said.

Will Wambach play in the Olympics next year? You know what I mean? With that in mind, it’s tough to imagine Wambach making next summer’s Olympic team.

Vertelney emphasizes Wambach’s status for the U.S. Women’s National Team for the Summer Olympics in 2016 is still uncertain.

The Americans, who won their first World Cup since 1999, kick off a 10-city celebration tour on August. 16 in Pittsburgh. That’s five fewer players than teams were allowed to carry at the World Cup.

She said playing the Federation Internationale de Football Association Women’s World Cup on artificial turf disrespected the women’s game and showcased a diminished product. She hadn’t come off the bench in a World Cup match since 2003. The Olympics don’t start until August 5, 2016, but fellow forwards Alex Morgan and Sydney Leroux recently had minor surgery on knee and ankle injuries. “I’m excited to go and vacation, get away from a little bit of the whirlwind I’ve been on, to rest, relax and to be able to make maybe some of those future decisions”.
