Beacons and gun salutes as Britain’s Queen Elizabeth turns 90
Beacons across Britain have been lit to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday on a day the country celebrates the monarch’s milestone.

Relive one of Queen Elizabeth II’s most memorable quotes to honor her 90th birthday.
In her Christmas message last December, the Queen said how she was looking forward to a busy 2016 and commented how she would have Happy Birthday sung to her a few times or twice. “The queen lived through the abdication of her uncle, Edward VIII”.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, a rare republican in public life, added that, whatever “different views” people have about the monarchy, most believe the queen “has overwhelming support”.
The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery rode past Buckingham Palace in central London, before staging a gun salute across the River Thames at noon, and the bells at Westminster Abbey rang in tribute.
“The whole collection provides a wonderful insight into mama’s long life”, said Prince Charles, who narrates the documentary and sat down with the queen to reminisce about her life on film.
She will also light a beacon, the first in a chain of a thousand around the country and the world, symbolising the length of her life and her reign.
The Queen with her five great-grandchildren and her two youngest grandchildren.
The portrait, which will be turned into a stamp sheet, features Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles (a.k.a. the Prince of Wales) and Prince William (a.k.a. the Duke of Cambridge) as well as the two-year-old posing in Buckingham Palace.
The 2-year-old looked more than happy to be on Royal-handbag-holding duties, and had everyone gushing over how adorable she looked.
Prince Charles, the 67-year-old heir to the throne, recorded a tribute to his mother for broadcast on the BBC World Service. Last year, at the age of 89, we saw her carry out visits to Germany and Malta, host two State Visits and visit various places across the United Kingdom including the Royal Maundy service in Sheffield.
Citing a source close to the Royal Family, the Daily Mail reported Tindall’s decision to hold her great-grandmother’s purse wasn’t planned. That day will be celebrated with Patron’s lunch, street party and more.
And long may you reign over us.
An extract from the 1947 show report described the visit: “Princess Elizabeth visited the show on the opening day and was accorded an ovation on her progress to and from the showyard, which, at times, became nearly embarrassing in its fervour”.

She automatically became queen upon her father’s death, although the official coronation did not take place for more than a year.
