Armenia is a key partner of Russia in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Moscow welcomes Yerevan’s initiatives aimed at strengthening the authority and efficiency of the regional bloc, visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Friday.

A Russian-brokered truce may not be enough to prevent fighting “on an even larger scale” after four days of war between Azeris and Armenians this month that involved “several hundred tanks” and 30,000 artillery rounds, Serzh Sargsyan said in an interview Saturday at the presidential residence in the Armenian capital, Yerevan.

Both sides accused each other Monday of conducting new attacks.

A soldier from the Armenian-backed Nagorno-Karabakh was killed by gunfire from Azerbaijan on Thursday morning, the defense ministry of the breakaway region said. They also demand to stop sales of Russian arms to Azerbaijan. The NKR Defense Ministry informs that the abovementioned Azerbaijani aggression is once again an obvious display that Azerbaijan openly continues violating the April 5 ceasefire agreement and purposefully escalates the situation.

Kerry also discussed bilateral relations with leaders.
