To mark the 40th anniversary of Lennon’s landmark legal victory in 1975, bosses at the Amnesty worldwide charity hosted a ceremony on Ellis Island to unveil a tapestry created in the musician’s memory. Ellis Island was the location of Lennon famously holding up the peace sign in front of the Statue of Liberty in an iconic 1974 portrait. The organization raised more than $5 million in royalties from covers of Lennon’s post-Beatles music since 2004.

He went on to describe Lennon as “one more Irish immigrant on an island full of Irish immigrants”, and added: “Let’s claim him, in fact let’s claim all the Beatles not as immigrants but as Irish”.
New York City Council speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito also declared July 29 as “John Lennon Day”.
The artwork showing Manhattan as a yellow submarine in a sea of blue is on display at the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration.

“Yes, I’m a Witch Too”, to be released January 22 by Manimal Records, will pair her with artists including her son Sean Ono Lennon, Cibo Matto, Death Cab For Cutie, Peter, Bjorn and John, Sparks, tUnE-yArDs, Miike Snow and Portugal The Man. The album will be released in CD, digital and vinyl versions, today’s announcement said.
Lennon who is originally from Liverpool, England, appeared in several deportation hearings in the early 1970s.
The U2 frontman said he was only a teenager while Lennon was fighting to stay in the United States despite political opposition from President Richard Nixon.
He said “are we going to give a chance?” The show ends in September. I just wish John was with us.
