Jungle Book’ Mauls ‘The Huntsman’ at Weekend Box Office
The film has also received great reviews from critics globally and is praised for its use of CGI and script. And looking ahead in 2016 there’s still Captain America: Civil War, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Finding Dory and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to look forward to, all of which should find massive audiences.

The $115 million film follows on the heels of its predecessor, 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman, which opened with $56 million.
The Jon Favreau (Iron Man) directed film has become the fifth-highest grossing film of the year as it nears a worldwide gross of $530 million. “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” remains the only foreign-language film ever to crack $100 million in USA theaters. Clearly, Disney’s CGI-driven remake of the 1967 original film overshadowed the opening of this week’s debutant, The Huntsman: Winter’s War. (I know. Bad joke, sorry.) With a budget of $115 million, the film only grossed $20.1 million in its opening week, and has made a total of $100.3 million at the box office now. Zootopia and The Boss rounded out the top five with $6.6 million and $6.1 million, respectively. But this weekend, up 29.3 percent from a year ago, is all about The Jungle Book. Dergarabedian noted that it could actually help jumpstart the summer movie season too. Is it possible this unheralded animated film could end up outgrossing the two biggest superheroes of all-time?
“Winter’s War” is trying to bolster its revenues overseas after falling flat in its domestic debut.
Barbershop: The Next Cut landed in third place with US$10.8 million in its second weekend in cinemas. It took in $20-million on its first weekend. Off 39%, its three-week total stands at $49.5 million.
Zootopia remains a strong contender even after eight weeks, earning an estimated $6.6 million for $316.4 million in domestic gross and passing the $900 million mark worldwide…a feat not accomplished by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which fell to sixth with an estimated $5.5 million. Now in super limited release, Sony Pictures Classics’ The Meddler dropped on four screens and collected $15k, while IFC Films’ Tale of Tales played on two screens this weekend to the tune of $9k.
Tom Hanks’ latest film, A Hologram For The King, opened to $1.2 Million in the #11 spot.

Studio insiders say one of the release dates announced Monday will nearly surely go to The Jungle Book 2, which is already in the works, even as Warner Bros. preps its own Jungle Book for October 19, 2018.
