“Jungle Book” box office collections: “We are thrilled with the exceptional response to “The Jungle Book” in India!”
The Jungle Book’s impressive opening beat every Disney live-action remake since 2010’s Alice in Wonderland, the Tim Burton film that began the mouse house’s current programme of reworkings. The biggest chunk came from China, where “The Jungle Book” grossed more than $50 million. It’s only the second PG-rated Disney movie to make over $100 million in the first weekend, according to Deadline. “That’s supported by the consistent calls-to-action to see the movie in IMAX and/or 3-D, so it’s very much being sold as a big spectacle that needs to be seen on as big a screen as you can manage”.
As per reports, the movie will have a sequel and the production unit is already working on the script right now.
Jungle Fever has been taking the world by storm.
Barbershop: The Next Cut, the third comedy in the Barbershop franchise, made its debut in second place with $20.2 million. Disney says the film, which has impressed critics and moviegoers around the globe, also took in an estimated $136.1 million overseas.
Other studios have tried to remake classic fairy tales, including Time Warner Inc.-owned Warner Bros., which had a recent flop “Pan”.
The Jungle Book sets a new standard for CGI animals. As it is essentially a children’s story, the movie was expected to have a lot of families watching, and true enough, 49 percent of the audience were from the category.
The Kevin Costner action thriller “Criminal”, however, opened with a mere $5.9 million for Lionsgate.

Despite giving the film a solid 8.1 rating on Douban.com and first-rate critical reviews, Chinese audience were still not as expressive they have been with Disney’s Zootopia, which amassed a par excellence 9.3 Douban rating.
