Jerry Jones: Cowboys likely staying at 4, but QB/RB unlikely

“Most likely stay”, Jones said, via the Star-Telegram’s video of the press conference.

At one time, the Dallas Cowboys might have been envisioning securing quarterback Tony Romo’s successor with the fourth pick in the 2016 NFL Draft on Thursday night.

There’s also opportunity cost to consider – if the Cowboys take Elliott, they’re passing on the opportunity to take, say, Elliott’s Ohio State teammate, Joey Bosa. Randy Gregory could step in for Lawrence, but he’s already suspended for the first four games of 2016.

THE QB QUESTION: With top-rated prospects Jared Goff and Carson Wentz likely gone to the Rams and Eagles, the Cowboys still might be looking for Romo’s backup, and possibly his replacement a few years down the road.

RUNNING BACK: It defies logic that Dallas would take a running back with the fourth pick a year after deciding not to spend what it would take to keep 2014 National Football League rushing champion DeMarco Murray.

This year, Dallas has nine picks, with four of them coming in the sixth round.

And rather than addressing a specific need in the first round, Stephen Jones, the team’s executive vice president, said Monday that the aim will be to take the best available player.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said that Bosa has had “a couple issues in his life up to this point”.

“Our defensive front is still a position that we keep our eye on in terms of always trying to get better there and ultimately find a dominant type of pass rusher”, Jones said on his radio show this week.

The Florida State’s cornerback Jalen Ramsey has regularly been associated with being the Dallas Cowboys No. 4 overall pick as the organization sorely need a playmaker in their secondary team. “Just because we didn’t [re-sign] Murray, just because we have running back by committee, just because we have veterans as we’ve said, doesn’t mean at all that we’re not in the running back business”.

Kahn reports that Nick Eatman, a staff writer for Dallas Cowboys.com broke the news of this latest report. “When you see one that got suspended and couldn’t play in a game because he’s too rough on his own players that’s a good sign that he enjoys the physical part of the game”.
