The Turkish security forces at the border detained the eight foreign IS suspects while they were trying to enter the country from Syria.

News reports said police used water cannons on Sunday to disperse Kilis residents who had gathered near the governor’s office to demand greater protection. “Unfortunately there is no authority across our border”.

“My son wakes up with nightmares… We are afraid to stay in our houses”, Ayse, a 46-year-old woman, told Reuters. On Friday two people were killed in an attack on the town, home to around 110,000 Syrian refugees.

On an official trip to the province of Gaziantep near the border on Saturday, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu promised that all necessary measures would be taken to prevent rocket fire into Kilis.

Turkey wants to establish a safe zone in the 98 kilometre stretch between Manbij and the border in which to shelter Syrian refugees, the foreign minister said.

U.S. Maj. Gen. Peter Gersten, deputy commander for the fight against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria, said that the mobile, long-range rocket system will be the fourth one deployed around the region.

“In order to clear the area of Daesh, we have to give the moderate opposition both aerial and ground support”, Cavusoglu said, using an alternative acronym for IS.
