Witnesses last saw the 4-foot-tall, 48-pound girl at 5 p.m. Sunday while she was riding a white Razor scooter with her long hair pulled to the side in a braid, police said. The doll, which had wings, wore a purple dress, just like Maddy had been wearing, and had the words “I can fly home” printed on it. This afternoon Santa Cruz DA Jeffrey Rosell announced at a press conference that the sole suspect in the case, 15-year-old Adrian Jerry Gonzalez, will be charged as an adult with her murder, with the special circumstances of sexual assault, kidnapping and lying in wait, and he could face life in prison without parole.

Last Sunday night, Madyson’s mother reported that she was missing.
According to Santa Cruz Police Chief Kevin Vogel, evidence shows the 15-year-old lured Middleton into his apartment Sunday evening and killed her.
The victim, Madyson “Maddy” Middleton, and the suspect were acquainted because they both lived in the Tannery Arts Center apartment complex, according to the police chief.
Authorities also say they don’t have a clear motive in the killing.
Maddy and Gonzalez lived at The Tannery Arts Centre, a non-profit public facility with around 100 affordable loft units with about 250 residents, 50 of whom are children.
