The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of a baby’s life to optimize these benefits, continuing to breastfeed for two years and as long thereafter as is mutually desired by a woman and her child. Last year there were 1628 “latches” over 114 venues across New Zealand and it’s hoped this year’s event will see that number rise.

Alabama cities hosting Big Latch On events on Friday or Saturday include Florence, Athens, Huntsville and Cullman in north Alabama; Oxford and Birmingham in central Alabama; and Auburn, Enterprise, Dothan and Mobile in south Alabama.

The event, which launches World Breastfeeding Week, is celebrated in 31 countries and 845 locations around the world.

The Clark County Breastfeeding Coalition is organizing the once a year Big Latch On this couple days. There are many health benefits of breastfeeding. It’s the original fast food – it’s always fresh and delivered at the right temperature plus it’s free and readily available. “Breastfed babies have less chance of diarrhoea and vomiting and of developing chest and ear infections”.

Those who can not attend a Big Latch On event don’t need to miss out.
