Bernie Sanders to Host Rally in Springfield Thursday

“Bernie Sanders ran a scorched earth campaign in NY that personally attacked Hillary Clinton at every turn, and he was crushed by 16 points”, Mr. Jeffries said today, referring to Ms. Clinton’s triumph over Mr. Sanders in the April 19 NY primary.

Speaking to MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Tuesday, as the polls in five Northeastern states prepared to open, Sanders said that there are many women who would be qualified and that he would consider as running mates should he win the nomination. With the vast majority of members on the platform committee elected through each state’s delegation selection process, Sanders supporters could exert influence over the Democratic Party’s message that emerges from the Philadelphia convention.

“We are in this campaign to win, but if we do not win, we intend to win every delegate that we can, so that when we go to Philadelphia in July, we’re going to have the votes to put together the strongest progressive agenda that any political party has ever seen”, Sanders said.

Clinton is poised to shore up her formidable delegate lead over Sanders in Tuesday’s Democratic primary contests in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

At rallies, Sanders has sent mixed signals during the past week over whether he will ease up on Clinton.

Rendell, a Clinton supporter, said that could undermine Sanders’ effort to address wealth inequality and campaign finance reform.

She says the Democratic front-runner flip-flops too much on issues, while she believes Sanders says what he means. Sanders would need upward of 60% of remaining pledged delegates to win, including flipping the support of many superdelegates.

After Tuesday’s contests, Clinton is all but sure to be the Democratic nominee, with 2,151 of 2,383 delegates needed to clinch the nomination.

“His normal demeanor is grumpy”, she said, but despite the increasingly fractious tone, “I think he will do it”, said Kunin, who’s been critical of Sanders. That state votes June 7. Doing so could alienate Sanders’ legions of supporters.

Trump also reiterated comments against his Republican rivals Ted Cruz and John Kasich, who announced a joint strategy Sunday to defeat Trump, saying that the partnership “makes them both look weak” and that it could backfire in upcoming races.

“We can not afford to poison our water”, he said.

“You know, I can’t snap my finger and tell people what to do”, Sanders said.

Sanders supporters’ devotion – evident at the rally, prompting the kind of screaming and yelling heard at rock concerts – has fueled a remarkably successful insurgent campaign, one that has rung up big and unexpected victories despite nearly no institutional support within the Democratic Party.
