Trump outlines ‘America First’ foreign policy

“No vision, no goal, no direction, no strategy”, Trump said in his first major foreign policy speech here after he declared himself as a “presumptive nominee” when he won primaries in all the five States.

Throughout the primary Trump has differed himself from Republican orthodoxy by heavily criticizing President George W. Bush’s foreign policy. “But he clearly did not understand what the America Firsters used to talk about was that there was not any Nazi threat to American interests”.

Mr. Trump underscored his belief in globalisation only on America’s terms, and said he was “sceptical of any worldwide agreement” that compromised the country’s interests.

“We must as a nation be more unpredictable”, he told his audience at a Washington DC hotel. Americans must know that we are putting the American people first again.

“We’re rebuilding other countries while weakening our own”, he said, insisting that America’s foreign policy had been “a complete and overriding disaster” over the past two decades. “We have no choice”, Trump said.

“To our friends and allies, I say America is going to be strong again, America is going to be reliable again”, Trump said.

As some reporters noted, on this occasion teleprompters were present. He doubled down on his previous assertion that other countries must contribute to global security agreements, such as North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, if they’re to get the benefits of American military protection. Those concerns were amplified when Trump introduced a foreign policy team last month that left many scratching their heads.

“Their days are numbered”, he said. “The challenge is that there isn’t a lot more he can say that will give people comfort about the way he will conduct foreign policy as president”. We’ve had a president who dislikes our friends and bows to our enemies, something that we’ve never seen before in the history of our country. ISIS will be gone if I am elected president. “Since the breakup of the Soviet Union, we have lacked a coherent policy. But if America fights, it must only fight to win”, he said.

Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump. “And if not, the US must be prepared to let these countries defend themselves”, he added.

He said he would build up the USA military to keep pace with Chinese and Russian military programs but would use American armed forces only when absolutely necessary.

In the speech, the real estate mogul also lamented the deterioration of America’s military and blamed Obama for shrinking the defense budget. She is in favor of a no-fly zone in Syria – a euphemism for declaring war on the Assad regime on one side, while also bombing Isis on the other.

The speech dealt mostly in sweeping generalizations, though what details Trump did mention seemed to contradict points he had made minutes before in the same speech.
