Ravens Take Notre Dame OT Stanley With 6th pick In NFL Draft

The Baltimore Ravens selected the offensive tackle out of Notre Dame 6th overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. The consensus All-American would be the Irish’s first top-10 pick since former Bloom Township standout Bryant Young went seventh to the 49ers in 1994.

A since-deleted video of Tunsil, an Ole Miss product, smoking from a bong surfaced just before the draft began. The Irish haven’t had much success in the draft since then, but could see a handful of players getting drafted in the first three rounds this year, including Jaylon Smith, Will Fuller and KeiVarae Russell. It’s unclear whether that influenced Baltimore’s decision. He was widely ranked as the No. 2 offensive lineman in the draft behind Mississippi’s Laremy Tunsil and said on the NFL Network he didn’t expect to be picked ahead of him.

“So my point is as an evaluation, they’re very, very close, and Stanley has got no off-the-field issues”.

Stanley almost left for the National Football League in 2015 – predicted to be a first round pick then – but ultimately opted to stay one more year with Notre Dame. He seamlessly transitions from power blocker to finesse pass protector. Stanley showed great maturity in acknowledging his weaknesses and returning to school to work on them and improve his game. Monroe played in 11 games that year, and last season suited up only six times before placed on injured reserve in December.

The Ravens hope to have a left tackle for the next decade that will draw comparisons to Jonathan Ogden.
