Syria conflict: United Nations envoy calls on USA and Russian Federation to save talks

“It will not be hard for everyone to come back around the table”, de Mistura added.

The envoy said he meant to call a new round of talks to take place in May.

The bloc representing the opposition at peace talks in Geneva, the High Negotiations Committee (HNC), on Wednesday threatened to boycott the next round of talks unless the government stopped its bombing campaign.

“I really fear that the erosion of the cessation is unraveling the fragile consensus around a political solution, carefully built over the previous year”, de Mistura said in his U.N. Security Council briefing.

When asked whether President Bashar al-Assad’s role had been raised in the talks, the envoy said they did not get into names of people or their positions in specific.

De Mistura said he’s urging the leaders of the USA and Russian Federation to intervene because both presidents’ legacies are “linked to the success of what has been a unique initiative which started very well”.

The head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 20 people were killed, including three children, and that the hospital was completely destroyed.

The al-Quds hospital was supported by global medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) or Doctors Without Borders, which said it was destroyed after being hit by a direct airstrike that killed at least three doctors.

“And I must say that the concept of a new government and a political transition with a new constitution is quite a lot already in terms of preparing of what could be the next steps”.

De Mistura reported the latest progress of the talks to the UN Security Council early on Thursday and later held a press conference. Nearly half were in Aleppo, although shelling and a vehicle bombing in Damascus also claimed lives.Syrian state media said 14 people were killed as some 1,300 rockets fell in regime-controlled residential parts of Aleppo. But now every 25 minutes, one Syrian civilian will die on average.

United Nations special envoy Staffan de Mistura voiced deep concern at the truce unravelling in Aleppo and at least three other hotspots, although he saw some narrowing of positions between the regime and opposition visions of political transition.

“Hence my appeal for a U.S”.

Major and regional powers, who form the International Syria Support Group, would need to help in elaborating the fundamental issues to reach agreement on a viable political transition in future rounds, he said.

On Tuesday, at least 35 people – including eight children – were killed in Aleppo in fighting between government forces and rebels, a monitoring group said. “Not anymore. Everyone acknowledges that that is the agenda”, de Mistura said.
