Mets trade for Carlos Gomez, send Wilmer Flores and Zack Wheeler packing

That is what happened Wednesday night, when a widely reported trade that had the Milwaukee Brewers sending center fielder Carlos Gomez to the New York Mets did not happen.

“Unfortunately, social media got ahead of the facts, and it may have had an adverse effect for one of the players involved”, Mets GM Sandy Alderson said after the game. However, the Mets left Flores in the game to bat in the 7th and take the field in the 8th inning, after the reports that he had been traded.

The Mets continued to use Flores in Wednesday’s game against the San Diego Padres, even after the impending trade news became public.

After the game, Terry Collins said that he was as confused as Flores and everybody else. Gomez began his career with the Mets before getting traded to the Minnesota Twins in the Johan Santana deal on February 2, 2008. The Amazin’s, however, last night may have topped themselves with what the New York Times described as “one of the most freaky moments in the 2015 baseball season”.

Gomez was to be traded to the New York Mets, but the trade fell through. “In the last month I’ve played every day”, Gomez said Thursday afternoon. “That’s why I got emotional”.

Wheeler, rehabbing in Florida after Tommy John surgery, followed the developments on social media.

“During the game, I heard there was a trade and I got emotional”, he said.

Agent Scott Boras, who represents Gomez, and the Brewers agreed Thursday that there is no medical issue significant enough to halt any trade involving Gomez. He took the field in the top of the eighth with moist cheeks and red puffy eyes, as his teammates tossed the ball around the diamond. “I said, ‘Why?’ There’s no reason”, Flores said, via ESPN.

Now that Hamels is gone, CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman wrote the Yankees will talk to the Tigers about Price, though they are not necessarily considered a favorite to get him.

News of the swap swept the cellphones in Citi Field and the Mets dugout.

The Giants, who rank 24th, and Astros, who rank 25th, are two other clubs that find Gomez appealing, but the Giants might not have the prospects to land him and the Astros appear more focused on bullpen help, sources say.

The Major League Baseball trade deadline is tomorrow, and the Mets have been active over the past several days, acquiring Juan Uribe, Kelly Johnson, and Tyler Clippard.
