Just a day after foiling Jake Arrieta’s bid at repeat no-hitters five pitches into the game, the Milwaukee Brewers came two outs away from being no-hit by the Miami Marlins’ anonymous twosome of Adam Conley and Jose Urena.
Lucroy followed by striking out and Chris Carter hit into a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat.
Check back for updates. As for Milwaukee, they’re 0-7 in their last seven Saturday games and 6-15 in their last 21 home games.
“I love him and we’re going to move forward”, manager Don Mattingly told reporters. “I just know my command the last two games has not been very good with the fastball”.
“I never like coming out of the game, no matter what the circumstances are”, Conley said.
“This kid has a chance to be really special so there’s no way, at this point in the season, that we’re going to let him go to 130”, Mattingly said. He opted to protect the young man’s arm rather than go for history.
“I know I’ve got to attack hitters but if you look up and you have 80-some pitches in three or four innings, then you can’t pitch deep into the ball game”.
The Brewers scored three times on four hits in the ninth.
The 23-year-old Davies picked up his first career victory against the Marlins on September 7 when he allowed one run and four hits in seven innings in his second big-league start.
“I didn’t actually (think it would drop)”, Lucroy said. “Probably. Dee’s pretty exciting”. Closer A.J. Ramos then walked Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Santana to bring the potential winning run to the plate in Villar, but he struck out swinging. Santana reached on an error and Villar and Braun each walked to load the bases with nobody out. The no-hitter could have ended in the first inning had he been in the lineup.
Conley has allowed four runs in each of his past two starts, including a 5 2/3-inning stint against San Francisco in his last turn.
The damage could have been even greater for Davies, who put runners at first and second with nobody out in the fifth but escaped when Marcell Ozuna chopped a ball right at third baseman Aaron Hill, setting up a ideal triple play.

“He’s the type of pitcher that has to be fine with stuff”, Counsell said. Bour staked Conley to an early lead with a three-run homer in the first inning, added another run with an RBI double in the third and capped off his day with a solo home run in the sixth. It was a good start for the Marlins, who had traveled overnight from Los Angeles and were also dealing with the blow of losing all-star second baseman Dee Gordon to an 80-game suspension for PED use.
