The man who fired the shots has been released from police custody, and he faces no charges at this time.

A second firefighter, 19-year-old Kevin Swain, was also shot and transported to a Baltimore hospital. Swain is listed as serious but stable, and is expected to recover, Brady says.

Records show the brother of the man living in the home asked for a welfare check on his brother, who suffers from diabetes and hadn’t responded.

He feared the man was having a medical emergency, but when they got inside, police say the man opened fire. A person inside fired several rounds, striking the two firefighters and the person who had initially made the call for a welfare check.

Brady said Ulmschneider was described as a “good old hard working country boy who loved his job”. He said anytime there is an event such as this, the department will review its protocols and possibly make changes.

When the firefighters forced their way into the man’s house to render aid, they were within guidelines. “Time could have been of the essence”, Brady said.

Prince George’s County police officers rushed to the scene and arrested the suspect, who has cooperated with police, authorities said. Two other firefighters, we learned, sustained serious jaw and knee injuries fleeing the gunfire.

By order of Maryland governor Larry Hogan, the state’s flag is being flown at half-staff to honor his memory.
