Tense protests outside Trump speech in California
Donald Trump’s big win in CT means he’ll take dozens of CT delegates and alternates to the Republican National Convention in Cleveland to support his presidential bid, but some state GOP insiders won’t be in the mix, and others will be screened for their loyalty to a candidate they had not openly endorsed. Trump delivered a free-flowing, 30-minute speech, then quickly left. It was the sort of small-scale interaction with party activists and donors that he has generally eschewed for grander rallies.

“Truly uncommitted” delegate Gordon Denlinger, a former state lawmaker who is now a managing partner of a venture capital firm, said he’ll give great weight to how his district in the heart of Amish country voted – Trump won it with 44 percent.
“The strongest support was for Cruz”, said Randy Blair, chairman of the Republican Party in Webb County along the Texas-Mexico border, which narrowly supported Trump during the primary. Despite differences, he emphasized party unity in the fall. “I’m different because I’m going to win states that no one else can”.
Trump supporters surrounded the demonstrators and shouted: “Build that wall!”
About two-thirds of those 40 were Trump supporters from the start; the rest said they would support him because he won their congressional district. “In terms of women’s health, while we may not be funding Planned Parenthood, we’re not defunding women’s health in OH”, said Kasich.
Kasich speaks to the convention Friday evening, and Sen. Ted Cruz and his running mate Carly Fiorina will be speaking at the convention Saturday.
But he’s not the only one at the convention looking for votes.
Many protest rallies have focused on Trump’s rhetoric on illegal immigration.
Dozens of cars – including those of Trump supporters trying to leave – were stuck in the street as several hundred demonstrators blocked the road, waved Mexican flags and posed for selfies. Some 20 arrests were made.
Eventually, Burlingame police with the assistance of closed off the 1300 block of Old Bayshore Highway, and the California Highway Patrol redirected cars exiting from Highway 101 back onto the freeway.
Before his speech on Friday, news helicopters showed Mr Trump and his security detail crossing a motorway before entering the hotel via a side door. After that, in a rambling speech punctuated by one-liners, Trump listed his accomplishments in the primary season so far.
Trump’s foreign policy vision, like his economic proposals, are firmly rooted in a promise to return the United States to a period of military and economic strength last seen in the mid- 20th century.
“Any candidate who won CT is going to be certain of their loyalty”, Frey said. On April 29, it was the Bay Area’s turn.
