Fastidiously engineered Ford EcoBlue diesel promises big fuel savings
The new EcoBlue engines provide up to 20 per cent more torque at 1250rpm compared to the old 2.2 litre TDCi, with an improvement in emissions of more than 10 per cent and economy of 13 per cent (in the Transit spec), reduced NOx emissions and is quieter too. A new after-treatment for exhaust gasses allow the EcoBlue engine to comply with Euro Stage VI emissions standards that will be introduced in September 2016, requiring a 55 percent reduction in NOx emissions versus Stage V standards.

Following the reveal of the updated Transit with a new EcoBlue diesel engine, the Ford has officially confirmed the engine will roll out on future passenger models.
Dominic Evans, Ford Europe’s specialist for noise, vibration and harshness, said that the EcoBlue engine is so refined that it will be the brand’s first commercial vehicle diesel to achieve passenger auto levels of NVH.
The 2-litre EcoBlue engine will initially be offered with 105, 130 and 170bhp in commercial vehicle applications.
Ford claims it is a “clean-sheet design”, with redesigned internals reducing friction and creating a clean-burning combustion system.
A new low-inertia turbocharger has been installed as well and features a turbine wheel made from Inconel.
In the Transit, as well as improving fuel consumption, emissions are said to also improve by more than 10 per cent. It will also have mirror-image porting for better engine breathing and a new high-pressure fuel injection system that will provide better engine response and more precise fuel delivery.
Ford currently has one of the most efficient engines on the planet, the 1.0-liter EcoBoost, which is now joined by a new 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel motor. The new engine has been developed from scratch by the United Kingdom and German Ford engineers. A noise-optimised cylinder-head, block, stiffening ladder-frame, optimised oil pump and oil pan, all help to reduce sound energy at idle by up to half as much as the 2.2L TDCi.

Ford say the EcoBlue engines will be offered across its passenger vehicle range, with likely candidates anything from the Kuga and Focus to the Mondeo and Focus, with a 1.5 litre version joining in later too.
