The Texas Rangers have agreed to a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies to acquire Hamels and left-handed reliever Jake Diekman in exchange for five prospects, multiple outlets reported late Wednesday night. Besides a “beautiful face” that female fans say they do not want to leave, the work Hamels did in the community through the Cole Hamels Foundation will also be missed as he heads to Texas.
“He’s got a long track record of great success”, first baseman Mitch Moreland said of Hamels. “It will be huge for us”.
The 2008 World Series MVP has been integral for the Phillies, particularly between 2007 and 2011 when he helped lead them to five straight NL East Titles, two pennants and a World Series. “It’s kind of a bummer, but at the same time we need to see the Phillies get better, so this is a good opportunity for them to get better“, said Aaron Brown of Northern Liberties.
Though he was never as vocal as Jonathan Papelbon, who was traded to Washington on Tuesday, Hamels was eager to be dealt to a contender. Hamels is signed through the 2018 season and is guaranteed $82.1 million through the end of that deal.
The other two prospects Asher and Eickhoff are guys who were more put in the trade for quantity rather than highly projected potential.
Even in Wednesday’s game, the IronPigs were feeling some of the ramifications of the hectic time leading up to Friday’s trade deadline.
Hamels is due more than $70 million the next three seasons but the Rangers will not be on the hook for all of that.
As for the Marlins, it was another familiar salary dump.
The pitchers involved leave a great deal to be desired, though the average earned run average (ERA) between Asher, Thompson and Eickhoff in their collective minor league experience is 3.77.
Hamels will be the best pitcher on the staff for the remainder of this lost season and he will be defined as the ace until Yu Darvish returns from Tommy John surgery sometime in 2016.

That team is the Houston Astros. The starting pitcher from the Padres that the Cubs are said to be focusing on is Tyson Ross.

The catcher the Phils got, Jorge Alfaro, is not as highly regarded as Blake Swihart. 284 with 34 doubles, 23 homers, 73 RBIs and 34 steals.

Eickoff, 25, is a combined 9-4 with a 4.30 ERA in 19 games (18 starts) in Double-A and Triple-A this year. He has 121 strikeouts in 118 innings this season.
