The Santa Cruz County district attorney, Jeffrey Rosell, did not answer questions as to why Madyson was not discovered during the initial search of the complex on Sunday.

Gonzalez has been charged with murder with a special allegation of lying in wait, kidnapping, forcible rape, lewd acts with a child younger than 14 and rape by instrument, which are all felonies. Setorro Garcia, a Tannery resident who knew both the victim and suspect, said Gonzalez had been curious about the investigation. “When we came back, my brother said they found her and all I heard was ‘how come nobody’s doing anything, how come nobody’s calling 911 and it was like, I think we know why”, he said. In a news release, Chief Kevin Vogel of the Santa Cruz Police Department said that the second sweep was a “more thorough and focused canvass”.
Another resident, Kirby Scudder, described Madyson as a typical 8-year-old, alternately shy and gregarious.
“Our hearts and our thoughts and our prayers go out to those close to Madyson who have been devastated by the loss of this very precious life”, said Santa Cruz mayor Don Lane at a press conference. Gonzallez often practiced Yo-Yo tricks in his spare time, and he attended Santa Cruz High School, according to neighbors. One girl was walking Madyson’s dog, Lucy.
A memorial has been set up in Madyson’s honor, overflowing with dozens of bouquets, stuffed animals, balloons, candles and notes.

“We all miss you”, wrote another, next to a picture of the slain girl with wings and a halo.
