The GTA is bracing for a full-fledged heat wave, the likes of which we haven’t seen so far this summer.
Monday’s high is expected to reach 32 C feeling closer to 36 with the humidity. The Medical Officer of Health issues a heat alert when temperatures have reached 31 or higher, with a humidex of 40 or higher and overnight lows of more than 20C for two consecutive days.
“You develop a greater tolerance to the heat as the summer goes by, but unfortunately that doesn’t mean your body has a greater ability to cope with the heat”, Kenny says.
Anyone with family, friends or neighbours with increased risks of heat-related issues is asked to check on them to make sure they’re alright.
The heat wave will be concentrated in Ontario, he said, but higher than normal temperatures are expected to drift east into areas of Southern Quebec and the Maritimes.
According to the Simcoe-Muskoka District Health Unit symptoms of heat illness include dizziness, vomiting, headaches, rapid breathing and extreme thirst.
Besides standard recommendations such as drinking enough water, avoiding the outdoors, or using sunscreen and appropriate clothing, the city is also encouraging residents to cool down in public pools, libraries, movie theatres, or even at City Hall.
