Reports said Wilkins, who was almost eight months pregnant at the time, had responded to Lane’s online advertisement for maternity and baby clothes.

The baby, later named Aurora, did not survive outside the womb.

“It is clear that you need healing and I hope that you get it”, Ms Wilkins said to Lane.

“They won’t get to watch as she decides who she is or what she wants to do with her life”, Berkenkotter scolded the 35-year-old Lane as she passed down her sentence. “Ms”. She regained consciousness and used a towel to try to stop herself from bleeding to death.

Wilkins addressed the court during Friday’s sentencing hearing. A friend read a letter from Lane’s older daughter than said her mom did wrong but “I still love you”.

“It won’t bring Aurora back, but it will send a message about human life”, he said. “Lane, you stole that from Michelle”.

Defense attorneys had argued the attack was made impulsively and that it wasn’t planned, and that she should be held accountable for reckless manslaughter and not attempted murder.

“Judge Berkenkotter was clearly listening to everything that we were saying”, Wilkins told reporters, adding she felt justice had been served.

After talking for about an hour, Lane bludgeoned her, slashed her with shards of glass from a lava lamp, pommeled her with her fists and choked her into unconsciousness, Wilkins said. At first, Wilkins said she thought Lane was swatting at a bug and Lane played along.

Lane, who plans to appeal her conviction, did not address the court, but several of her family members expressed their sympathy to Wilkins and said that the attack was out of character for Lane, who they said is a caring person.

During the trial, prosecutors focused on Lane’s obsession with having a baby and told the jury Lane lied about being pregnant. “The only tears you shed during the trial were those of self-pity, to the sound of your own voice as your lies were slowly revealed”.

Lane had lured Wilkins with a Craigslist ad for maternity clothes.

When Ridley came home early from work that day to meet Lane for a doctor’s appointment, he said he found the fetus in a bathtub and drove the child and Lane to a hospital, where she begged staff to save her baby.

Lane then wrestled Wilkins into a bedroom, pinning her to the ground.

Judge Maria Berkenkotter called the 100-year sentence justified because the crime was “brutal, shocking and cruel” and said it was “miraculous” Wilkins survived.

Under the advice of her attorney, Lane did not speak on her own behalf prior to sentencing.
