“I arrived and I was okay, and then I practiced on Saturday and hurt my back a little bit in practice”, 17-time grand slam victor Federer explained.
He had also missed almost three months of the season after undergoing knee surgery following the Australian Open.
The 35-year-old Federer, a three-time victor in Madrid, had been a late addition to the field this week.
Federer only chose to play in Madrid last week and the news is a blow to the tournament, which also lost Serena Williams to illness before the start.
Roger Federer has been dealt a blow in his preparations for Roland Garros after being forced to withdraw from the Madrid Masters with a back complaint.
Federer said he was not anxious about his preparations for the French Open that starts on May 22. “Then I practiced on Saturday and hurt my back a little bit and stopped early. I just didn’t feel like I could practice”. Let me know in the comments.
Federer, Madrid champion in 2012, returned to action in Monte Carlo in April following knee surgery.
Federer has been plagued by issues over the past few months, with a knee problem and a virus ruling him out of tournaments in Rotterdam, Dubai, Indian Wells and Miami.
