Mets win 8th straight, Conforto and Flores HR to beat Giants

When Conforto batted again in the fifth, he disrupted the one groove that Cain had found. His solo shot on a first-pitch changeup was his 15th extra-base hit this season, tying him with Bryce Harper and Trevor Story for the NL lead. He said he spoke with fellow pitcher Jacob deGrom about the situation Saturday because he noticed that he’s pretty good at holding runners on base without changing his mechanics.

“Neither of them have ever played right field and I don’t think at this level, with our expectations, [it makes sense] to try to develop a player at a position he’s never played before at the big league level”, Collins said.

The Mets recent hot streak has correlated with Michael Conforto’s demolishing of baseballs. But the team is just playing so well right now. The question is for whom: On Sunday, he took Granderson’s spot in right field, but it’s unclear if that’s a long-term plan or because the left-hand hitting Conforto has been red-hot at the plate. They could be poised for an even more impressive run – next week, they play seven games against last-place Atlanta and San Diego.

Hunter Pence homered and finished with three RBIs and the San Francisco Giants stole four bases on their way to a 6-1 win over the New York Mets, whose eight-game winning streak ended quietly.

The Mets nearly gave away the game, too.

The Giants almost tied the game in the eighth, when they loaded the bases with none out against Addison Reed. Last month, Lagares made a spectacular leaping catch against the Phillies, which broke the center field wall at Citizens Bank Park. “To come back and give us two innings like that after probably the worst inning he ever had… he felt awful about it, but he saved the bullpen”.

Jeurys Familia took over in the ninth and closed for his eighth save in as many chances (see full recap).

However, manager Bruce Bochy said the injury does not appear serious and Panik might need “a couple of days” off. (This is where a rainout would help, too).

In Seattle, Felix Hernandez tied Jamie Moyer’s franchise record for career victories at 145 as the Mariners edged the Royals, 1-0, to hand Kansas City its fourth straight loss.

Two pitches later, Pence drove a 98 miles per hour fastball to the opposite field and over the right-field fence for his fifth home run this season and the first off Syndergaard. The Marlins’ Adam Conley struck out nine and kept the Mets scoreless in six innings, while Cincinnati’s Brandon Finnegan dominated the Mets through the first six innings, allowing just three hits, before giving up a three-run blast to pinch hitter Yoenis Cespedes in the seventh.

“I hadn’t really thought about it”, Bumgarner said of his success at Citi Field.

St. Louis native Max Scherzer fired seven shutout innings while Clint Robinson and Danny Espinosa cracked back-to-back homers in the seventh as Washington stopped the Cardinals 6-1.

Mets third baseman Wilmer Flores committed a throwing error with two outs in the inning, causing the runs to be unearned. Brandon Belt drew a bases-loaded walk, and Pence followed with a two-run single.

Overall, the Mets have outscored opponents 50-21 during their winning string.

Mazzaro got the call because he had been stretched out beyond 50 pitches and had not thrown in a few days. The 31-year-old is now winless in five starts with a brutal 7.00 ERA.

Chris Devenski (0-1) went five innings in his first major league start. The Mets have 31 home runs in their last 14 games. He has had at least one double in six consecutive games, tying a Mets record set by Jim Christropher, which was set in 1964. His streak of reaching base safely also came to an end at 17 games….
