Slain Hayward Sgt. Scott Lunger’s sister, Sierra Lunger, performs “The Star-Spangled Banner” at her brother’s memorial service in Oakland, Thursday, July 30, 2015. The public is invited and can enter through the main plaza entrance beginning at 9 a.m.
Gov. Jerry Brown, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf and other dignitaries are also expected to attend. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office will handle Hayward police calls Thursday with assistance from the California Highway Patrol.
The Hayward Rotary Club and local businesses will host a breakfast for police Thursday morning at the Hayward Executive Airport.
By 8 a.m., dozens of people already had gathered along the procession route in Hayward.
A police motorcade and Lunger’s family will escort Lunger’s body from Chapel of the Chimes, 32992 Mission Blvd., to the arena.
Authorities say Lunger was a 15-year-veteran who was shot in the head last Wednesday morning after he stopped 21-year-old Mark Anthony Estrada for swerving and driving erratically in his pickup truck. A backup officer returned fire, hitting the driver on his left side. Estrada later showed up at a hospital with gunshot wounds and was eventually arrested and charged with killing Lunger. The district attorney has filed special circumstances murder charges against him.
