Virat Kohli nominated for Khel Ratna

Team India’s Test captain and flamboyant batsman, Virat Kohli, has been recommended for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, country’s biggest sporting honour, by the BCCI.

Kohli, who received the Arjuna Award in 2013, got the nomination from the BCCI after he nearly single-handedly guided India to the World T20 semifinals, where the team lost to West Indies.

It is after a gap of four years that a cricketer has been recommended for the Khel Ratna.

Rahane, who had led Indian side in the past, is in contention to win the Arjuna Award. He was also named the captain of the ICC World T20 XI.

However, there has been no official announcement but a source close to BCCI have confirmed the sending of recommendetion lettir to the BCCI.

However, Kohli would face a tough challenge from other leading Indian sports personalities who have applied for the Khel Ratna. Rahane has also improved immensely and is today one of India’s most consistent batsmen, especially in the longer format. Last year, Rohit Sharma’s name was chosen for Arjuna Award.

For the Arjuna award, apart from Rahane, athletes Lalita Babar and OP Jaisha, shooters PN Prakash and Apurvi Chandela and archer Laxmirani Majhi have been nominated.

The victor of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, along with the citation, will receive a 7.5 lakh rupee as a prize money, while the Arjuna Award victor will get a citation and a prize of 5 lakh rupees.
