Train derails in Washington, DC; leaks hazardous chemical
The Maryland Transit Administration said its MARC Brunswick Line commuter trains on Monday from Martinsburg, West Virginia, to Washington would likely terminate at Silver Spring, Maryland. Evening Brunswick Line trains were departing out of Silver Spring instead of Washington, and the Maryland Transit Agency said in a statement late Monday that commuters can expect the same on Tuesday.

Metro officials said they hoped to have Red Line service fully restored Sunday evening.
Mayor Muriel Bowser said no trains will be running on the tracks Monday and CSX couldn’t say how long the cleanup might take.
A CSX freight train derailed in northeastern Washington, D.C. on Sunday, spilling hazardous material near a city subway station, and emergency workers were cleaning up the site after plugging the leak, officials and the railroad company said.
The train derailed Sunday morning, sending 15 cars off the tracks and spilling hazardous materials.
No one was injured in the derailment and no evacuations have been ordered.
Sodium hydroxide is a corrosive chemical that can irritate and burn the skin and eyes. The software takes into account 27 factors, among them the population along the route, the length of the trip, the number of river crossings and the speed at which the train would move. At least six blocks of Rhode Island Avenue NE were closed for much of the day.
Since the beginning of the year, nine CSX trains carrying hazardous materials have derailed in the United States, according to data published by FRA.
The accident forced the closure of the Rhode Island Metro Station and Rhode Island Avenue, it said. “Those are nasty things coming through”, he said, reflecting on what could have happened had the chemical spilled just a short distance south, near the Capitol. Red Line service is suspended between NoMa and Brookland.
The spill underscores the need for the District to devise a comprehensive rail plan, similar to state plans required under the 2008 Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act, he said.

“We need to do something about it”, said Cheh, who introduced legislation to create the office a year ago, but it has remained stuck in committee. “We would have inspectors”. CSX said its wheels were so damaged in this derailment that they can’t roll it out, so it will have to be lifted by a crane onto another flatbed truck.
