Bookies pay the price for Leicesters odd-defying title

Leicester, who won the Premier League title on Monday night after second-placed Spurs failed to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, completed one of the biggest underdog stories in sporting history, having started the season as 5000/1 outsiders.

With two games left, Leicester are seven points ahead of Tottenham and Saturday’s home match against Everton will be a glorious lap of honour.

The Foxes have surpassed all teams this year with an exceptional record of 22 wins and only three defeats, two of which came against Arsenal, en route to the title.

Leicester City were crowned champions of England for the first time in the club’s 132-year history after nearest challengers Tottenham Hotspur could only manage a 2-2 draw away to Chelsea on Monday. Football pundits, fans, bookies will be scratching their heads whenever the 2015-16 season of the Premier League is brought up in conversation.

The players had gathered to watch Tottenham’s game against Chelsea which Spurs needed to win to keep the title race alive.

“I have to say on his behalf that he has managed the club with his heart and he just hopes to gain a reputation for the country”.

Eden Hazard had scored the goal that brought Chelsea the title a year ago and, after a dismal campaign, he resurfaced to write another chapter in English football history.

“I’ve never known a spirit like the one between these boys”.

When asked by Sky Sports News if Leicester could repeat their title success, Ranieri said: “No. I can’t wait to get my hands on the trophy”. But they were held to a 1-1 draw by the 20-time champions. “They’ve been fantastic this season”, he said.

Hazard’s goal was nearly a year to the day since his strike won the title for Chelsea, which is 29 points behind Leicester. Chelsea’s collapse has been as astonishing as Leicester’s surge to the top of the standings it was bottom of last April.

“Everyone’s worked so hard for this, nobody believed we could do it, but here we are, Premier League champions and deservedly so”, Morgan told the club website (www.lcfc.com).

Ranieri who commended the support of the fans and management of Leicester City, said that players’ determination made the feat possible.

Former Chelsea boss Ranieri had said he would be flying home from a Roman lunch date with his 96-year-old mother during the match, but footage showed him leaving Italy earlier than expected.

He also played a role in keeping Leicester in the top league when he arrived, playing six matches in their run to fight off relegation after shifting to the club midway through the 2014-15 season. But for the moment, they deserve to celebrate a title they truly deserve in a season that will, without a shred of doubt, inspire all future generations.
