Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian told 22News that the criminal justice system is flooded with people who are in desperate need of treatment, not jail time. “We know that many people who die by suicide have a mental health condition, but that doesn’t mean that most people with a mental health condition are going to complete suicide”.

While definitive suicide rates are not readily available, experts in the mental health service estimate that some 500 people take their own lives in Ireland each year.
