The Sacramento Kings will be making another addition to their coaching staff in the near future, this time of the progressive variety.
According to multiple media reports, Hall of Fame basketball player Nancy Lieberman will become the next assistant coach of the Sacramento Kings. An announcement is expected next week.
“I’m honored and blessed to be a Sacramento King”, Lieberman told KCRA 3’s Michelle Dapper. “I think is a nice opportunity for her”. In 1986, Lieberman was the first woman to play in a men’s professional basketball league (USBL).
“I am a King”, Lieberman told ESPN Radio’s Ian Fitzsimmons via text.
Lieberman, 57, is a former player, head coach, and general manager in the WNBA. She was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996 and recently has spent time in the NBA D-League, where she started out as a coach of Dallas’ affiliate (making her the first woman to coach in the D-League) and then moved up to become the assistant general manager of that team. She briefly played in the WNBA during its inaugural season in 1997. Two days ago in the NFL, the Arizona Cardinals hired Jen Welter became the first female to hold a coaching position – where she will roam the sidelines as a training camp/preseason intern for the team under head coach Bruce Arians.

Lieberman is as qualified as anybody to coach on an National Basketball Association bench. Veterans DeMarcus Cousins, Darren Collison, Kosta Koufos and Ben McLemore also interacted with her during that time as they worked out with the Summer League team.
