The Belgium international’s strained relationship with goalkeepers’ coach Christophe Lollichon is one factor behind his discontent. Ter Stegen, who plays in the Champions League and Copa Del Rey matches for Barcelona, is unhappy with the amount of game time he gets at the club.

Chelsea originally bought Courtois from Genk in his homeland in 2011 but sent him out on loan to Atletico Madrid for a total of three years.

The 23-year-old played a crucial role in last season’s Premier League and Capital One Cup double, but his future has fell under scrutiny in a complicated campaign for both the team and himself.

Courtois has had a poor season by his high standards and has made just 21 Premier League appearances this term due to injury and competition with Asmir Begovic. By keeping important players such as Courtois around, and making a few key signings, Chelsea’s return to the Champions League should only take a short while.
