Blue Jays Acquire David Price from Tigers

Stints in Lansing were a part of the development process for the three left-handed pitchers the Detroit Tigers acquired in today’s trade of David Price to the Toronto Blue Jays. According to multiple baseball sources – all via Twitter – the Tigers are about to move their All Star lefty to the Blue Jays for a package of prospects, including Daniel Norris – Toronto’s top pitching prospect who made some headlines in the spring for living out of a van. Also reportedly included in the deal will be Jays minor league pitchers Jairo Labourt and Matt Boyd. The Blue Jays trailed Minnesota by two games for the AL’s second wild card and were seven behind the AL East-leading New York Yankees. He will be a free agent after the season. He’s recorded 138 strikeouts in 146 innings and has held opposing hitters to a. 241 batting average. And of course the Orioles did beat him in the playoffs against the Tigers, as they did the one time they faced him earlier in the season with Tampa Bay. His struggles have continued with Buffalo, as he’s pitched to a 4.27 ERA in 90 2/3 innings at the level, striking out 78 and walking 41.

While another bat was nice, the Blue Jays certainly need the rotation help -€“ their starters rank 23 in the majors with a 4.34 ERA.

By getting Tulowitzki, Hawkins and now Price, general manager Alex Anthopoulos took major swings at trying to end the Blue Jays’ long playoff drought. But he has already had tommy john surgery, which now a days isn’t really a big deal since everybody has it now.

Kaminsky has spent the entire season at Single A Palm Beach, going 6-5 with a 2.09 ERA in 17 starts. He is 0-2 with the Blue Jays this season, with a 14.85 ERA.

The Tigers acquired Price in a three-team trade at last year’s trade deadline, sending left-hander Drew Smyly and shortstop prospect Willy Adames to the Rays and centerfielder Austin Jackson to the Mariners. High priced Mark Buehrle and R.A. Dickey ($12M option) are not under contract after this year. He is a five-time All-Star and won the AL CY Young award in 2012.

But if it finalizes, no real significant starting pitcher is left on the market for the Yankees to grab.

This is the second straight season that he has been traded before the league deadline.
