The brainchild of Prince himself and shaped by then-newbie director Albert Magnoli, Purple Rain helped catapult the attention-getting young singer-songwriter and musician to global stardom in the summer of 1984.

The original seller said her sister, a makeup artist, received the piece from Prince after they worked together on “Purple Rain”.

The V-neck jacket, which is black with white cross-hatching and has leather sleeves from the elbows down, will be presented for sale in Profiles in History’s auction between June 29 and July 1 in Calabasas, California. “This is the first time ever for something like this, and it might be the only time because the rest of the costumes may be in his [personal] wardrobe”.

The respect was mutual between the two artists: in a 1990 Rolling Stone article (via Backstreets), Prince said, “I’m not real into Bruce Springsteen’s music, but I have a lot of respect for his talent”. “It seems like he controlled it all”, Maddalena said, according to Hollywood Reporter.

Maddalena, unsurprisingly, says the Prince blazer is the “star of the show”.

“Prince, thank you for your lovely music”, she told the crowd. Prince then directed the 1990 sequel, Graffiti Bridge.

Her latest album was only announced on its day of release last weekend and has immediately rocketed to the top of the global music charts.
