Selinger resigns as leader of NDP after election loss

Pallister first won Fort Whyte in a 2012 byelection after taking over as Tory leader. Ontarians were lukewarm on all their choices in the 2014 election, but stuck with an unpopular Kathleen Wynne because the Tory turned out to be more unappealing. He has not said how soon he would balance Manitoba’s budget. “We’re a have province waiting to happen”. Although the NDP came out the victor, the Green Party of Manitoba came very close.

That leaves Alberta as Canada’s sole remaining NDP jurisdiction, one that’s increasingly at odds with its federal counterparts over their radically resource-restricting LEAP Manifesto.

“I look forward to working with Ms. Miller as we move from the transition period into the operation of a new government”, Pallister said.

Pallister would not go into detail on files such as legalizing marijuana and assisted suicide, but said he will work with the federal government as it tackles those issues. Selinger first became an MLA in 1999.

Selinger did win his St. Boniface seat, but the NDP lost a number of cabinet ministers, including Finance Minister Greg Dewar, Health Minister Sharon Blady and Agriculture’s Ron Kostyshyn.

“We were going for our fifth term, we were fighting a number of dynamics … and I think we were also fighting a lot of (desire for) change”. “We’re going to keep growing Manitoba’s economy-whether it’s through investments, immigration or expansion”.

The Manitoba election wasn’t a contest of leaders.

Opinion polls have shown a solid Tory lead throughout the campaign. Speaking with The Globe before election day, he blamed opposition ads for keeping Manitobans angry at him about the increase. But has been a politician both provincially and federally since 1992.

The spoils went Tuesday to the Tories and Pallister, a former backbencher under Stephen Harper and a minister in the Manitoba PCs’ last government two decades ago.

He also lost voters’ trust during the campaign over misstatements.

Pallister told reporters at the time he was at a family wedding. Instead, the two men fought for over a month in a campaign filled with personal attacks and hyperbole.

Some political observers have said Selinger and the NDP were doomed from the moment they raised the PST after promising not to do so in the last election.

He then thank all those who ran and the NDP Leader Greg Selinger.

The outgoing premier has shattered the electoral coalition that made the NDP Manitoba’s default choice since 1969, according to Prof. I think they’ve done awful things for this province, But the Conservative party does not speak to me.

If a majority of Manitobans don’t love their new premier, they are putting plenty of faith in their new governing party.

After almost 17 years in power, the party was carrying too much baggage, he added. And now the collection of women, environmentalists, aboriginals, tradespeople and the working poor who once voted solidly orange have moved on.

Brian Pallister says if he is elected premier on Tuesday, he probably won’t spend as much time at his vacation home. He’s also pledged to join the New West Partnership trade agreement with other western provinces.
