After studying drama at the University of Birmingham, she won ITV talent show New Faces and in 1973 landed a regular role on BBC show That’s Life.
It featured an exceptional, mostly female, cast including Julie Walters, Celia Imrie and Maxine Peake.
‘The family ask for privacy at this very sad time’.
“Victoria will be sorely missed. She had quite a few years of struggle and difficulty, but it’s a credit to her absolute determination to push through and win her career from sheer hard work”. A killer stand-up and a fantastic songwriter.
“It has shocked the family but she dealt with it in her own way”.
Catherine Tate said: “The news is devastating”.
Victoria Wood was talented, dedicated and an inspiration to a whole generation of comedians.
“I think she is one of our greatest comic writers and performers, but she could also deal with serious issue as well, and she’s a huge loss”, Dame Esther said. An the later, 2,000 people – not including those who had paid £5 to stand – turned out to see Victoria.
“People talk about it as a collaboration, and I say, ‘Yes that’s right, ‘ but it’s not”.
He added: “Another reason I admire Victoria is that she was determined from the start to give her two children as normal an upbringing as possible and to shield them from unwanted media attention. She was a very special writer and the world has lost a great, great comedienne”. Actor Duncan Preston was close to the comedian after they worked together but even he had no idea she was ill until her family called him with news of her death. The caption with the picture read: “I don’t want to be the feminist comedienne”.
A versatile talent, Wood performed solo and in ensembles, played comic songs on the piano and wrote scripts for the stage and television. She was also made an OBE by the Queen in 1997.
