When it comes to giving up runs game after game, nobody in major league history has been as bad as these Reds relievers.

“Desperate times sometimes take desperate measures”, manager Bryan Price said. “It’s been a challenge to get on a roll”.

The San Francisco Giants scored a run against Reds reliever Caleb Cotham in the eighth inning. We should be able to win games, 8-5, instead of losing them, 8-5.

The Reds don’t want to rush any of their young pitchers from the minors, leaving them with few options for improving the bullpen. Lamb responded with six solid innings. He hit his third of the season off Giants newcomer Johnny Cueto on Monday night, a three-run shot.

Now set to reenter the club’s rotation on Tuesday, Lamb will join fellow starters Brandon Finnegan, Alfredo Simon, Jon Moscot and Dan Straily. Moscot could be available to pitch out of the bullpen within a day or two…. He stepped to the plate with the bases loaded, swung at the first pitch from Brandon Finnegan – one of the pitchers the Royals sacrificed to acquire him – and hit a dribbler that somehow scooted under the gloves of both Votto and second baseman Brandon Phillips to drive in two runs.

Cubs 7, Pirates 2 • Jason Hammel raised his record to 4-0 and Anthony Rizzo hit two doubles as Chicago won at Pittsburgh.

Colon gave up seven hits, six in the first three innings, walked none and struck out seven. The Reds traded Cueto to Kansas City last July.

Angel Pagan (left hamstring) and Joe Panik (groin) continued to make enough progress that the Giants are not considering putting either player on the disabled list. RHP George Kontos threw 40 pitches on Tuesday and is scheduled to throw in a simulated game on Friday. Back on Friday in his last appearance, Peavy was clobbered for six runs in just over two innings against the Mets. The shoulder bothered him in his last start, and the Reds made a decision to give him a couple more days to recover. Although he felt fine physically, Lamb wasn’t pleased with his three rehab starts that resulted in a 9.22 ERA. The Giants try for their first three-game sweep in Cincinnati since 1999. Over the course of 10 starts in Cincinnati in 2015, he posted a 5.80 ERA with 58 strikeouts across a total of 49.2 innings of work.
