Nick Markakis: Markakis enjoys four-hit night versus Red Sox
In his first double, Ortiz tied two baseball greats Ted Williams and Jimmie Foxx with his 525th double, and would pass the two more legends with his next double.

It was the longest power outage for the franchise since the Boston Braves went 16 games without a homer in 1946. He had only one clean inning and gave away a 1-0 lead in the second on Smith’s double and a two-run single by Nick Markakis.
Boston’s Hanley Ramirez had an RBI single in the first inning and drove in another with a double in the third.
Nick Markakis had three singles, a double and three RBIs and the Braves beat the Boston Red Sox 5-3 Thursday night, ending Atlanta’s eight-game losing streak.
The Braves, having to rely on singles and doubles, are last in the majors in runs.
Clay Buchholz allowed five runs over 6 1/3 innings Thursday. 500 for the first time since September 25, 2012.
The Atlanta Braves are not a good baseball team. Prior to the home run, the Braves had just three home runs as a team, and hadn’t hit any since April 10th.
Peterson somehow walked again to start the sixth inning.
Jose Quintana (3-1) struck out a season-high 10 in six innings for the Chisox, who at 16-6 are 10 games above.
The Braves, who opened the season with nine straight losses, have lost seven straight. The righty was unable to pitch a hitless inning allowing another run in the 6th. Atlanta’s pitching staff has allowed an average of 0.0 runs per game during the last 10 games, lower than their season average of 0.0. He had four hits in Tuesday night’s 9-4 victory.
Yet Bogaerts was called safe at second base, to the surprise of the Braves.
Fernando Salas (1-1) got the victory in relief and Joe Smith got three outs for his second save in as many chances. RHP Masahiro Tanaka (1-0, 2.92) gets the start for NY.
A-Rod’s 690th career homer gave him triple digits in the Rangers’ ballpark.
A walk, a groundout and an RBI single by Markakis made it 4-2 in the fourth. He took third on Pierzynski’s single – the catcher’s 2,000th career hit – and scored on Kelly Johnson’s single. But through five starts, Buchholz has a 6.51 ERA, his highest monthly mark since May 2014, when he notched a 7.40 ERA that was so ugly, he wound up on the disabled list to deal with a minor knee injury and to clear his muddled head. He has seven in the last two games, but Wright, who struck out eight on Wednesday, has won both games. Xander Bogaerts was next and drew a walk.
The Sox, as they have 11 times in the last 17 games, scored in the first inning.
“Not give up five runs?”
The win was Boston’s third-straight over Atlanta, and fourth-straight overall.
RHP John Gant was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Wednesday. The run given up by Vizcaino was his first this year.
The Dodgers have dropped three straight and saw their scoreless streak extended to 14 innings. Pedroia doubled to right.
Robinson Cano and Adam Lind had solo homers for Seattle, which earlier in the day announced a pending ownership shift from majority owner Nintendo of America to the team’s minority owners. Against Buchholz, they were 3 for 6 with three walks and scored all five runs. For the fifth consecutive start, he failed to complete the seventh inning. The Braves had finally hit a home run, and it was their star, Freddie Freeman.
1 run, 1 hit, 0 errors, 0 left on.

If there was a game they were going to lose in this four-game home-and-home set, this was certainly the one. Braves 5, Red Sox 3. Buchholz issued Peterson his third walk to start the inning, Aybar advanced him to second and Smith singled him in.
