Speaking to the press Wednesday morning, Baker acknowledged that Trump had earned the Republican nomination “fair and square”, but said he wouldn’t vote for him.
“I’ve already said before that I’m not going to vote for Mr. Trump and I sincerely doubt I’ll be voting for Hillary Clinton”, Baker told reporters on the banks of Jamaica Pond, which he helped stock with about 1,000 trout.
“He is a pro-life, anti-gay Republican, he can not win in MA”, said Michael Goldman, a Democratic strategist with Goldman Associates.
He said he could not recall if he had ever voted for someone other than a Republican in a presidential race. “But I think Secretary Clinton has some real believability issues”.
Asked if he plans to write in a candidate, Baker said it will depend on who else is on the ballot. Chris Christie prior to the New Hampshire primary in February.
He went on to describe the race as one of the most “troubling election cycles across the board I’ve seen in my lifetime”, Baker said.
Baker has been critical of Trump for months.
Specifically, Baker’s political advisor Jim Conroy said in an email, the governor, “will support with formal endorsements, appearances in the district, and fundraising”.
Despite those questions, Baker acknowledged on Wednesday that Trump would be the nominee.
