In the second half, Antoine Griezmann scored from a quick break to equalise for Atletico, leaving Bayern with a mountain to climb.

Spanish football club Atletico Madrid chief coach Diego Simeone has expressed his pride in having reached the final of the Champions League, after “having left behind two of the three best (teams) in the world”.

Xabi Alonso’s deflected free-kick had given Bayern the lead on the night, before Griezmann netted the crucial strike on the counter.

“We just didn’t achieve our goals”.

Although Robert Lewandowski set up a tense finale with a header in the 74th minute, Fernando Torres’ failure to convert from the spot did not prove costly as the 2-2 aggregate score sent Atletico into the final.

For that to happen, their neighbours will have to beat Manchester City in tonight’s semi-final second leg in the Bernabeu, but should Real make it to Milan on 28 May they will face a tough task in the final.

Thomas Mueller steps up to take the spot kick but Oblak guesses right then saves Alsono’s rebound to keep Atleti in it.

“It was hard, a tough game with a great team and we had to defend to try to get where we are going”. We can be proud and happy. Bayern now have to look forward, they still have a cup final against Borussia Dortmund, which will be really tough. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough. “It’s bitter that we go out after such a game”, Bayern captain Philipp Lahm said.

Bayern created a nervy finish with 16 minutes remaining through Lewandowski, who headed home from close range after Vidal’s superb header across goal from David Alaba’s left-wing cross.

“I have given my life for this team, I have fought and given my best”, said Guardiola.

However, they could not find a way past Oblak, who blocked David Alaba’s 20-yard volley in injury time.

Arturo Vidal claimed “ugly football” unfairly prevailed as Bayern Munich were knocked out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.
